Background of the Study

Neonatal infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in newborns worldwide, with significant consequences in developing countries like Nigeria. Infections such as sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis can result in rapid deterioration of the infant's health and are often preventable through appropriate infection control practices. Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, play a crucial role in preventing neonatal infections by ensuring proper hygiene, sterilization, and monitoring protocols are followed.

In Kogi State, where healthcare facilities may face resource constraints, ensuring nurses are well-trained and knowledgeable about infection prevention practices is crucial. This study investigates nurses' knowledge and practice in preventing neonatal infections at healthcare facilities in Kogi State, focusing on the effectiveness of their interventions and identifying challenges that may hinder optimal infection control.

Statement of the Problem

Neonatal infections remain a significant concern in Kogi State, with the potential to result in high neonatal mortality rates. While infection prevention strategies are well-documented, their implementation is often inconsistent. This study aims to explore the extent of nurses' knowledge and practice in preventing neonatal infections and to identify gaps that may contribute to poor outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate nurses' knowledge and practice in preventing neonatal infections in Kogi State healthcare facilities.

  2. To identify the challenges nurses face in implementing infection control measures for neonates.

  3. To assess the impact of nurses’ knowledge and practice on the rate of neonatal infections in Kogi State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge among nurses in Kogi State regarding neonatal infection prevention?

  2. What infection control practices are being implemented by nurses to prevent neonatal infections in Kogi State?

  3. What barriers do nurses face in effectively preventing neonatal infections in Kogi State healthcare facilities?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in Kogi State have insufficient knowledge regarding neonatal infection prevention.

  2. There is a significant relationship between nurses' knowledge and the implementation of effective infection control practices in neonatal care.

  3. Barriers such as inadequate resources and training significantly hinder nurses' ability to prevent neonatal infections in Kogi State healthcare facilities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on healthcare facilities in Kogi State. Limitations may include variability in resources across hospitals and differences in the quality of training provided to nurses.

Definitions of Terms

  • Neonatal Infections: Infections that affect newborns within the first 28 days of life, including sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis.

  • Infection Control Practices: Measures taken to prevent the spread of infections, such as hand hygiene, sterilization, and proper use of personal protective equipment.
